About DePuy Art

One of seven children born to a family of French Huguenots in upstate New York, Dawn DePuy became an artist at the age of three. By seventeen she was an accomplished portraitist, and shortly thereafter entered The Art Students League where she was trained in classical oil painting.

While studying art, Dawn began dance training with the Martha Graham School of Modern Dance, and continued throughout her life as a professional dancer/choreographer, studying with noted instructors from the American Ballet Theater and Alvin Ailey Dance Company.

A move to Connecticut led to the study of portraiture, landscape and watercolor at Silvermine College of Art, and she became an Adjunct instructor at Western Connecticut State University, teaching in the Communications and Theater Arts Departments.

Today, as a full time painter in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Dawn is fulfilling a lifelong dream. Painting in series, Dawn explores her diverse subjects in depth, adding richness and detail to each theme she approaches. The Tails Series features rapturous canines frolicking at the world famous Santa Fe Dog Park. The Old Ninety-Nine's Cave Series keeps alive the mystery of the ostentatious but hidden cave of the Warwarsing Chief of the Ninety-Ninth Tribe. And in A fold in the Fabric of Time Series, Dawn breathes life into long forgotten picnics, honeymoons and holidays from the first half of the 20th Century when life was full of simple pleasures and innocent pastimes.

In addition to her painting and dance careers, Dawn, a licensed pilot, has run a glider business, acted in theater and television, and is currently awaiting publication of her autobiographical novel, The Black Crayon.

Addendum to Biography

During her seven-year residence in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Dawn developed bodies of work representing Southwest influences, as well as working in a treatment center as both an art therapist and addictions counselor.

Dawn moved to Tucson, Arizona in 2005 where she began a three-year residence. Her involvement with horses, both wild and domestic, and big cats, both Bob and Cougar, expanded her development as an animal artist. She fostered and rehabilitated Stag Hounds, and they became a part of her art.

As a juried member of Desert Artisans' Gallery in Tucson, Dawn's involvement in the Tucson art community expanded and she gained a position as a juried artist for the Tucson Museum of Art.

Dawn moved to St. Louis in November of 2008 to be closer to family. Now as a full time resident artist in St. Louis, Dawn is represented by Creative Art Gallery, 3232 Ivanhoe Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63139.
